HILLTOP HOUSE
CONTENTS:
First heard starting 11/01/37 over CBS,
this soap opera took several twists over the years.
From 11/01/37 until 03/28/41, this program was heard with the
character Bess Johnson being played by her name sake Bess Johnson, a
dedicated caseworker at an orphanage named Hilltop House in the town of
Glendale. Palmolive Soap, the
sponsor, with some budgeting problems, decided to cancel the program. Bess Johnson then moved to NBC, and was heard from 03/31/41
to 09/25/42 as Bess Johnson, in a new soap opera, The Story Of Bess
Johnson. In this story line,
Bess became the superintendent
of a boarding school. The
sponsorship of that program was Kleenex.
Back at CBS, the network revamped Hilltop House with Miles
Laboratories sponsoring for Alka-Seltzer, with Jan Miner and Grace
Matthews in the lead role of Julie Erickson.
This new attempt was heard from 05/17/48 to 07/01/55.
The series then moved to NBC from 09/03/56 to 07/30/57.
